The Great Depression: An Analysis into the Theories

Meza Cordoba, Roberto LU (2011) EKHR21 20111
Department of Economic History
Abstract
The ambition of this investigation is to analyze, in a qualitative way, how different
theories explain the Depression. Using a case study, this investigation reveals among
other things that since the 1930’s, little consensus has been reached regarding the
complexity and causes of the Depression. The investigation also shows that there
were problems with both monetary and fiscal policies as well as with the exchange
rate mechanism of the time. Attention needs to be focused on what happened, in order
to be able to develop the causes further, as they will be important for future crises and
subsequent policies.
