Abstract
This Master’s thesis was done in collaboration with ABB Force Measurement and the task was to develop a product design concept of an electronic unit, used as a controller in ABB Force Measurement’s product systems. As part of the result a guide to be used when working with industrial design questions was also made.
ABB Force Measurement develops measurement products mostly used by the rolling mill industry and in vessel engines. As part of a project developing a new electronic unit platform, the industrial design questions has got more attention and the desire to get a more homogenous and well thought product design has become stronger.

ABB Force Measurement develops measurement products mostly used by the rolling mill industry and in vessel engines. As part of a project developing a new electronic unit platform, the industrial design questions has got more attention and the desire to get a more homogenous and well thought product design has become stronger.
ABB has a Product Design Guideline that describes how the products appearance can and should communicate ABB. This has been used as a base for this Master’s thesis, but to achieve a product design that reflects ABB Measurement, there has also been focus on finding out what expectations and demands there are on these kinds of products. By interviews with people in different positions at ABB Force Measurement the words Robustness, Quality, Reliability, User friendly and Intuitive was used to describe ABB FM and it’s products. These words were used and further investigated during the work with the product design concept.
An industrial design methodology has been used for this project were the process starts with establishing the task and the target groups and list the requirements and demands of the product. Through information search and analyses of the requirements and demands, studying the competitors and generating ideas, three concepts were developed and visualised. These three concepts were evaluated and all the people involved had a chance to say their opinion. The final concept was created through this evaluation, were the best ideas were combined to find the best possible solution.
The guide was based on the process of the Master’s thesis and was made with the prospect to increase mechanical and electrical designers’ understanding of industrial design and the methodology behind. By describing terms and difficulties, in industrial design, the thought is that this guide could be the link between mechanical and electrical designers work and industrial design, and make the work with ABB Product Design Guideline easier and more understandable. Hopefully it can also show the benefits of working with industrial design. (Less)
