Abstract
A trend, which can be noted in the field of cash handling, is the increase of ATMs that are able to recirculate banknotes. Cash recycling means that notes deposited by one customer are then available for withdrawal by another from the same machine. Cash recycling has both economic advantages and reduces environment impact, as transport to machines for filling and emptying them can be decreased. What the market expects now is recycling ATMs that handle coins too.

SCAN COIN is one of the leading companies within Coin Processing, Cash Deposit and Cash Automation Solutions. The company introduced the Cash Deposit System, for coins already in 1988. The company now wants to meet the market’s needs by developing a SmartCashCenter with cash recycling for both notes and coins.
This Master Thesis is initiated by SCAN COIN in Malmö and carried out at the company and the Division of Machine Design at the Department of Design Science at LTH.
The aim of the thesis is to present concepts of recycling machines for public use. It is desired that the SmartCashCenter is accessible to disabled and that the interface is kept as simple as possible.
The concept development process used in this Master Thesis is based on the method by Ulrich and Eppinger. Through identifying customer needs a number of criteria, for later evaluation of concepts, are stated. To structure the concept generation the process is divided into the four areas; Placement of Modules, Accessibility, Transport Solutions and Interface. These areas are treated separately, but always with the others in mind as they are closely connected. The selection is made in two steps, one for the interior of the machine and one for the exterior. The concepts are then rated according to how well they fulfill the criteria.
The final concept is based on transportation of deposited coins and mainly built up with the company’s modules. It is possible for wheelchair users to front the machine which leads to a user friendly interface. A new solution now enables the machine to dispense loose coins and reject coins into the same tray which also is used for deposit. This has resulted in a more compact interface.
After the concept testing a few changes are suggested to implement or investigate further. One thing that has to be looked upon further is the shape of the coin tray. (Less)
