User Interface on Professional Laundry Equipment

- Electrolux Laundry Systems (ELS) is a leading supplier of professional laundry solutions worldwide. The main product categories are washing machines, tumble dryers, and ironers. There are several models of each product category, suited for different customer needs and business areas. There are also many different control systems, in fact too many.
In 2008, ELS started a project called Project Globe, with the intention to gain a one-company-approach and a harmonized product concept of the whole product range. The current interface, Clarus Control®, is out-dated and needs to be renewed and more usable. A co-operation with a design-consultant agency (called “Agency”) led to a beginning of an updated, attractive, and user friendly interface... The current interface, Clarus Control®, is out-dated and needs to be renewed and more usable. A co-operation with a design-consultant agency (called “Agency”) led to a beginning of an updated, attractive, and user friendly interface called Clarus Pro. The authors of this thesis started this project where Agency ended it with the ambition to complete the Clarus Pro user interface specification. The background material of interface research, user needs, design guidelines, and a thorough design proposal was handed over and worked as a base for the continued work.
Our method – research, user tests, and evaluation – gives us answers to the usability problems with Clarus Control and functions as basis for developing Clarus Pro and its specification. Through this project, all menu flows have been completed and are handed over to ELS together with a complete specification, which makes Clarus Pro ready to be implemented. In some cases, design alternatives are presented as proposals for ELS to choose from.
The Clarus Pro interface concept is to be implemented in approximately one year from today’s writing. Hence, we cannot show any of the actual design, functions, and features that have been developed in this project. We have, however, tried to describe the process and result in illustrative texts and basic sketches. (Less)
