The study had two purposes, to do a Swedish translation and validation of the Affective Style Questionnaire (ASQ), which is a brief instrument to measure affective style; and to investigate whether there is a correlation between affective style and the experience of symptoms of depression and/or anxiety. Affective Style is defined as individual differences in the sensitivity to and regulation of emotions. The study included 108 young adults filling out ASQ and other questionnaires (ERQ, TAS-20, AAQ) concerning emotion regulation, alexithymia and experiential avoidance. The results support the validity of the Swedish version of ASQ and the original three-factor structure was replicated with the following affective styles: (1) Concealing, habitual attempts to suppress or conceal affect; (2) Adjusting, an ability to handle, adjust and work with emotions in an adaptive way; and (3) Tolerating, a tolerant and accepting attitude towards emotions. The Swedish version of ASQ showed acceptable psychometric properties. In a subsample (n=60) the factor Adjusting showed a significant negative correlation with depression and anxiety in men. There was a weaker significant negative correlation between Tolerating and anxiety for women. Further research on the associations between affective style, gender and psychopathology is needed.
