- Abstract
- The purpose of this Bachelor thesis is to investigate and explain an ongoing process on the Swedish book- and publishing-market as a result of the new alternative ways of publishing. The investigation concerns questions about what need the electronic publishing fills for the authors compared to traditional publishing, and what happens to the writer’s role when published digitally on self-publishing sites. In addition to this we have tried to find out what the future looks like for these websites.

In addition to this we have tried to find out what the future looks like for these websites.
In order to answer these questions we have contacted representatives from three Swedish self-publishing sites and two writers from the same sites. The questions during the interviews have mostly focused on matters of why and how the sites were founded, thoughts about the writer’s role and the new possibilities for alternative publishing solutions.
We find that the websites have fulfilled their purpose of filling the lack of an alternative way to publish yourself compared to traditional publishing. Furthermore they provide the opportunity to get your writing in physical form, as a book, without having to go through the publishers as gatekeepers.
Another result of the new technologies is that the writer becomes more social and public, being active on different forum and homepages. The tool that the Internet provides also allows the writers to take on more responsibility for their writing and the work around it. This indicates that the writer’s role becomes more of the publisher’s role. The result from the study shows that the self-publishing websites are not, and never will be, a threat to the publishing houses, mainly because they carry out completely different tasks. (Less)
