- This thesis focuses on the Swedish politics of immigration and the discourse within governmental committees from 2000-2010.
The aim of the thesis is to describe and analyze the existing discourse as it appears in three different texts, and to finally be able to conclude some of its main conceptions. The method used is a text analysis, with a discourse perspective based broadly on thoughts of Michel Foucault and social constructivism. In order to analyze existing conceptions in the governmental committees the text is processed by theory regarding communitarian and liberal ideas of state organization, as well as theory regarding identity and in- and out-groups. The aim of the thesis is to describe and analyze the existing discourse as it appears in three different texts, and to finally be able to conclude some of its main conceptions. The method used is a text analysis, with a discourse perspective based broadly on thoughts of Michel Foucault and social constructivism. In order to analyze existing conceptions in the governmental committees the text is processed by theory regarding communitarian and liberal ideas of state organization, as well as theory regarding identity and in- and out-groups. In the final chapter it is concluded that the discourse to a large extent can be understood as built up around a dilemma regarding communitarian and liberal ideals. Whilst the idea of the neutral state acts as a norm, the social practice in many ways is best understood as deriving from communitarian thoughts. It is also shown that the political field in itself contributes to the creation of “The Others” by dividing and categorizing humans, and that the discourse continues to reproduce what it also tries to defeat.
