Competitive Advantage of Norway’s Aquaculture: Can Sea lice pose any threats?

- Abstract
- Today Norway possesses world leadership within salmon-farming. Although strongest in this field, Norwegian aquaculture faces certain challenges in relation to salmon and trout cultivation processes. The problem of sea lice, a parasitic disease affecting salmonids, poses significant concerns to fish producers. The question is whether this disease is able to undermine competitive advantage of Norwegian aquaculture industry. Using Porter’s theory on competitive advantage of nations allows one to identify the strongest parts of country’s fish-farming. An econometric analysis is performed to investigate the relation of sea lice to the factors of economic significance to the industry. No direct effects on profitability were detected, although... No direct effects on profitability were detected, although feed conversion ratio, representing one of the most important production costs, appeared to be sensitive to the disease. Viewing this problem within the context of coming changes within the international salmon market one may suggest that in a short-term perspective, sea lice is not of threat to Norway’s fish-farming, while it may cause greater problems in a long-term perspective. For Norway to withstand strong rivalry and maintain its competitive advantage it is suggested that more attention be paid to the problem, including the support of research that would help in dealing with parasitic disease.
