How Certain Factors and Consumer Preferences Affect the Prices and Attractiveness of Train Travel: The Case of Germany
(2011) NEKM01 20111Department of Economics
- Abstract
- This paper examines how attractive or beneficial traveling by train is from a price and time perspective in comparison to other means of transport within Germany. These comparisons are carried out using a measure known as the Proportional Net Difference in Cost in addition to descriptive statistics. Comparisons of the attractiveness of traveling by train versus other types of transport are also made for travel between former Eastern and Western Germany, two regions which differ with respect to wealth and therefore might differ regarding prices of traveling by train. This essay also examines and analyses factors which are thought to determine the prices of train travel. This analysis is performed with the aid of the classical linear... (More)
- This paper examines how attractive or beneficial traveling by train is from a price and time perspective in comparison to other means of transport within Germany. This analysis is performed with the aid of the classical linear regression model (CLRM). The Linear City Model is used to explain why traveling by train may be an attractive means of transport for certain consumers. Theories pertaining to the Determinants of Demand help explain why certain factors determine the prices of traveling by train. The main results are that the duration of traveling by train will have a clear effect on the price of traveling by train and that the train is the most attractive option for certain routes. Possible benefits of traveling by train from an environmental perspective are presented throughout this paper. (Less)
