- Abstract
- The purpose of my study was to examine care staff and unit heads perceptions and experiences in cultural meetings, both within the staff groups and within the recipients of care in the home service. I wanted to investigate what these cultural meetings means in the work with the elderly, how it is noticed and affects their work.
The study is based on a qualitative research method with interviews of one unit head with Swedish background, one group leader with Swedish background and 5 nurses, 2 of which had foreign background. These people represent three caretaking units, both public and privately run, in two municipalities, in the South of Sweden. The study is based on a qualitative research method with interviews of one unit head with Swedish background, one group leader with Swedish background and 5 nurses, 2 of which had foreign background. These people represent three caretaking units, both public and privately run, in two municipalities, in the South of Sweden. I have analyzed my material through a social constructivist approach on ethnicity which means that ethnicity is considered to be created through social relationships which we through meeting with other people, ideas, standards and values creating ourselves and others. The result shows that the care staff considers it positive to work with a workforce with different cultural backgrounds, as it provides new learning experiences and an increased understanding of the unknown. It also appeared that language was a central aspect in the work witch could imply both difficulties and positive aspects. The difficulties could be that the staff and the elderly not always understood each other. The personnel’s different knowledge in language could be helpful and lead to a language matching so that the recipient of care in the end would understand. The result has also shown that there is no resistance towards staff with different cultural background in the workforce but it does show that there is in some cases negative perceptions from the elderly. These negative perceptions will change after a few meetings between the care staff and the recipient of care. (Less)
