Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine whether normalization is created and if so done within a specific context. More specifically the aim is to study how normalization is created and made in institutional treatment of young people, according to cognitive behavioral therapy. The two research questions I intend to answer are, how can treatment according to cognitive behavioral therapy operate normalizing? And In what ways can normalization function through the various treatment components of CBT?
The method used to achieve the purpose of the study is discourse analysis based on social constructivism. The data is collected through semi-structured qualitative interviews with treatment staff from two state-run institutions. Disciplinary... (More)
The purpose of this study is to examine whether normalization is created and if so done within a specific context.
Disciplinary power and pastoral power are used as analytical tools, and previous research in the current topic. Normalization is found as a complex phenomenon in which different agents and forces act together in different ways. The analyses show that CBT as a method, and the different components of CBT can be seen as normalization. Different components can also be seen as a form of disciplinary power. The analysis also shows examples in how the young adolescents and the staff act in ways that can be seen as protests or ways to counteract. The conclusion is that treatment according to CBT in the context of this study can be seen and be used as normalization and a form of power that govern individuals. Despite this there are exceptions and examples where the individuals protest or try to take control of the system. (Less)
