- Abstract
- According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), at the end of 2010, there were 43.7 million forcibly displaced persons worldwide, and 15.4 million of these were refugees, including many from Myanmar. Currently, Thailand hosts around 100,000 refugees from Myanmar who have been registered by UNHCR and the Thai government, and another 53,000 unregistered refugees. The protracted refugee situation along the Thai-Myanmar border has led to a high level of humanitarian aid and assistance. International non-governmental organizations (NGO) have operated in the refugee camps ever since their establishment in 1984 and manage the majority of humanitarian programs for camp residents.

The Thai government’s confinement policies towards the refugees have been criticized for creating a state of dependency. Although Burmese refugees are given temporary asylum in Thailand, they live in closed camps which have created conditions of dependence and have severely limited the self-reliance of refugees. Restrictions placed on the freedom and movement of refugees have had negative psychological impacts on refugees. This research will analyze how aid dependency influences the psychological condition of refugees from Myanmar in Tham Hin Camp, Thailand, looking particularly at the feelings and behavior of refugees.
