This essay seeks to examine the interactive relationship between one's economic capital and one's well-being as seen from a post-colonial perspective. More specifically, the intention has been to explore to what extent economic capital affects the well-being of Namibian and Swedish university students. Certain conclusions have been drawn from the results of qualitative interviews with four interviewees: two Namibian and two Swedish. The significance of culture and consumption regarding experienced well-being is discussed. Analysis of the interviewees' answers has been comparative, though the main emphasis has been on the material provided by the Namibians. The actual results indicate no significant differences between the Swedish and the Namibian interviewees, apart from a few variations in their reasoning. The analysis discusses how the Western world influences consumption in a former colony such as Namibia, as well as how this can affect the local population. Attempts to develop former colonies along Western lines are also discussed, and parallels are drawn on the basis of post-colonial theory. The main conclusion of the investigation is that economic capital can affect all the interviewees to a greater or lesser extent. The well-being of the Namibian interviewees, however, is influenced to a greater extent by their economic capital. One can therefore say that, seen in the post-colonial perspective, Western patterns of consumption would appear to be spreading more and more in Namibia.
Key words: well-being, economic capital, Namibia, Sweden, post-colonialism. (Less)
