Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
Thunderstorms are one of the most dangerous phenomena in our atmosphere. Mankind has always been interested in observing thunderstorms. It is only recently that we have begun to understand the physics behind this phenomenon. However, there are still many gaps in the knowledge.
Since 2000, Denmark has been using the lightning locating system IMPACT which registers strike point, average amperage and polarity, among others. The system is especially good at localizing cloud-to-ground flashes.
During the period 2002-2010 data from the system has been compiled. The distribution of the number of strokes during the year and day has been studied. Also, the average amperage has been studied. The result indicates that thunderstorms most frequently... (More)

During the period 2002-2010 data from the system has been compiled. The distribution of the number of strokes during the year and day has been studied. Also, the average amperage has been studied. The result indicates that thunderstorms most frequently occur in June, July and August. Thunderstorms can take place during any time of the day, but in summer it is more prone to occur in the afternoon. Average amperage is generally greater in the period of September to May. The geographical difference in the number of flashes has also been studied. The result indicates that such a distribution does not exist, except for smaller variations. Other studies have shown that the percentage of positive flashes decreases during the summer months, but such a correlation could not be seen in this study.
In addition, two case studies have been carried out. (Less)
