- The aim of the study is to investigate the motives behind emerging economies' military spending. More specifically, answering the question: Why do emerging economies increase their military spending? It does so by analyzing the BRIC countries (Brazil, India, Russia, and China).Drawing from earlier study, it firstly develops an analytical framework consists of three hypotheses, then applies these hypotheses to the four cases, in order to explain why did these emerging economies increase their military spending, and which hypothesis or hypotheses explain those military build-up the best. - The aim of the study is to investigate the motives behind emerging economies' military spending. More specifically, answering the question: Why do emerging economies increase their military spending? It does so by analyzing the BRIC countries (Brazil, India, Russia, and China).Drawing from earlier study, it firstly develops an analytical framework consists of three hypotheses, then applies these hypotheses to the four cases, in order to explain why did these emerging economies increase their military spending, and which hypothesis or hypotheses explain those military build-up the best. The evidence offered by this study suggests that, during their early stage of economic development, emerging powers are likely to go through a fear-driven period, in which their military expenditures were mainly driven by perceived threats from abroad, but to a lesser extent, also local challenges to the regime legitimacy. However, as their economic strength improves, they gradually become more confident and ambitious, and start to increase military spending in a hope to assume great power status in the future. In addition to these hypotheses, the study also finds that countries with less historical burdens tend to skip the fear-driven stage, but later will also embark on ambition-driven military build-up, for examples, military modernization programs.
