Abstract
Alternative 13-meter roads (2 +1 roads) has recently become a major part of the Swedish road network, in 2008 there were around 1280 km of 2 +1. Since these roads have major downsides for the vulnerable road users, it is important to review the design of the places where the vulnerable road users have to cross the road. The traffic is affecting both environment and humans at three levels, local, regional and global. For this particular report it is most important to understand the local level where you find issues such as air pollution, noise and barriers. There is also a major safety issue that must be taken into account when different traffic groups have to share the same road space. Vulnerable road users, pedestrians and cyclists, have... (More)

The traffic is affecting both environment and humans at three levels, local, regional and global. For this particular report it is most important to understand the local level where you find issues such as air pollution, noise and barriers. There is also a major safety issue that must be taken into account when different traffic groups have to share the same road space. Vulnerable road users, pedestrians and cyclists, have needs that differ greatly from motorists who are protected by a metal casing. It is therefore important when designing a road to have all road users’ needs in mind. Björkakorset consists of a main road (route 11) which is a 2 +1 road with an average annual daily traffic (AADT) of 8700 vehicles per hour locally at the crossing the speed is reduced from 100km / h to 80km / h. The connecting road is called 979 and connects from both sides of road 11. 979 have a speed limit of 70km/h. On the north side of road 11 the AADT is 200 vehicles per hour and on the south side it is 1200 vehicles per hour. Björkakorset is interesting to study because it has been changed three times in recent years. However, there are still some problems that we have found after doing field visits and interview studies. The main problems identified are: non-existing road space and poor lighting for vulnerable road users on road 979, obstruction at the sharp bend before Björkakorset, the lack of safety at the refuge at road 979, high speed on road 11 and difficult to cross the road due to the nature of high flow at rush hour. After identifying the problems, some suggestions for improvement are made. These are in brief: Separate illuminated path for vulnerable road users on road 979, reduced speed and changed location of the speed cameras on road 11 and a central barrier which extends up to the area where the vulnerable road users can stop in refuges at road 11. If all these changes are made, it leads to an increased sense of security and increased safety. Increased safety and security will lead to a more attractive and utilized public transportation. (Less)
