Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine and compare approaches to explain the
geographic differences in voter support for the radical right populist (RRP) party
Sverigedemokraterna (the Swedendemocrats) in the Swedish public parliamentary
elections in 2010. This is done with a comparative, theory testing research design,
comparing 50 Swedish municipalities with exceptional results for
Sverigedemokraterna, through four established theories of RRP-voters support.
The study can initially observe that the voter support for Sverigedemokraterna

The study can initially observe that the voter support for Sverigedemokraterna
was clearly the strongest in the Southern provinces of Sweden; Skåne and
Blekinge, while the weakest support was found in the Northern provinces as well
as in the Stockholm province and the island province of Gotland. The study also
finds clusters of municipalities with strong support for Sverigedemokraterna in the
areas close to the Skåne and Blekinge provinces, and in the central provinces of
Småland, Dalarna and Gävleborg.
The study can conclude that the differences can not be explained by economic
factors in the municipalities, but with the local and regional identity construction.
It can however also conclude that social capital and the share of farmers, foresters
and fishermen in the municipalities are factors to the support to
Sverigedemokraterna. In the southern part of Sweden, it also seems that the share
of disappointed voters for Socialdemokraterna (the Social Democrats) is a crucial
factor for the success of Sverigedemokraterna. (Less)
