- Abstract
- In this thesis I examine some of the political effects due to transnational corporations. Transnational firms are major actors on the international as well as the national level, where they on one hand are appreciated as conductors of economic growth and on the other hand have become a bargaining partner in policy making. What are the political consequences of making politics to attract these businesses? How does that change the democratic institutions of a country?
By doing a qualitative study of the general political and economical development in Malaysia, and by studying some of the democratic institutions which are directly affected by businesses and the legislations for these, I find the different policies of Malaysia to be, to some extension, conflicting. Where the authoritarian policies created to control social movements restrict, the economic policies created to support economic development, liberalize some of the democratic institutions.
Furthermore the policies concerning transnational companies and the companies as such seem to be, in the ethnically divided Malaysia, ethnically integrating. The policies change focus from ethnic conflicts to economic growth, and the firms employ independently of ethnicity. (Less)
