First out, existing theories arguing that flow security is the main challenge for the future wellbeing of the globalized societies are reviewed, secondly, the illicit trafficking flows of humans and goods such as drugs and small arms are reviewed drawing upon concepts of transnational crime and globalization. By using deductive reasoning drawing upon existing theoretical concepts of security and positive flows, the study then highlights the relation between the positive and the negative flows, arguing that these flows are interwoven, and that the negative flows are depending on the increased volume of the global positive flows. The paper concludes by showing that the negative flows constitute a threat to the vital systems according to the considered security concept and that the negative flows therefore should be given attention in the continuing process to create an effective and robust theoretical framework.
