Abstract
A lot of people suffer from nocturia which means that they have to get up in the mid-dle of the night to urinate. For the everyday healthy human this is not a serious prob-lem, they manage to go to the bathroom by themselves. But to the elderly population there is a risk involved. They could get hurt on the way to the bathroom or in many cases simply not wake up and urinate in their sleep. The existing solution to this prob-lem is that the residents at nursing homes wear diapers that the nurses change for them. The nurses walk rounds and check in on the residents even at night time if they have urinated. This results in awakenings of the residents and some diapers getting changed unnecessarily. At a nursing home for the elderly in Lund a company called Pampett is currently experimenting with a new product that would help both the nurses and their residents. It consists of a thin antenna placed under the sheet of their bed together with a little fluid sensor placed in the diaper. When the resident has uri-nated in their bed the antenna detects the wet sensor and a discreet lamp is lit in the corridor. The nurses do not enter the resident’s room unless the lamp is lit and there-fore the unnecessary awakenings are avoided. The nurses then change the dirty diaper with a new diaper and fluid sensor.

This Master Thesis was carried out at Pampett AB in Lund and at the division of ma-chine design, department of design science, LTH. The purpose of this Master Thesis was divided into three sub steps. The first was to find a replacement to the hazardous spray glue that was used throughout the production. The second purpose was to make their manual production of fluid sensors more effective by developing cheap and ba-sic devices that would assist. The last purpose of this master thesis was to make a suggestion for an automated machine that could replace the manual production at Pampett.

The first two steps of the thesis were solved using the methodology described in Ul-rich and Eppingers book Product design and development. To gain additional inspira-tion two books from industrial design were consulted throughout the project. The result was simple yet valuable tools to be used in the production of the fluid sensors. The hazardous spray glue was replaced with an acrylic based transfer tape. New rou-tines together with the tools were implemented and have resulted in a more effective and accurate production.

The example on how an automated process could look was modeled in the program Pro Engineer. The final solution was gradually built up and the result was presented. (Less)
