With an aim to elucidating and characterizing their use and reorganization of, as well as access to and exclusion from the societal space, it touches upon the used spaces as well as their maintenance of everyday life within the same. The non-citizen of Sweden – the undocumented immigrant – creates, together with the infrastructure that surrounds them, an adjusted space through their citizen and spatial practices. Drawing upon Henri Lefebvre’s theory on social space and a discourse analysis, the thesis thus explores the specific spaces of medicinal care, childcare and school, informal labour market and workplace, churches as institutions of help, as well as the “city” as a whole and the fear of movement within it. In specific rooms, undocumented immigrants expand their lived horizon, whilst in others they have to comply with existing structures. The thesis concludes that both actors (the nation-state and the undocumented immigrant) have to – although in different manners –relate to one another’s space. The decisive power, however, never fully embodies the undocumented immigrants. (Less)
