Syfte: Syftet med studien är att undersöka om och i så fall hur företag kan skapa bestående konkurrensfördelar genom att vara först på en marknad.

Metod: Studien är av en kvalitativ karaktär med en abduktiv ansats. Tidigare forskning och teoretiska ramverk har använts för att tillsammans med semistrukturerade intervjuer bilda en mer komplett uppfattning om betydelsen av First Mover Advantage.

Teoretisk referensram: Studiens teoretiska referensram består dels av välkända teoretiska ramverk så som Five Forces, Resource Based View och Red Queen Theory. Dessa kompletteras med teori från tidigare utförd forskning inom området och utdrag från kvantitativa undersökningar om effekterna av First Mover Advantage inom olika branscher.

Empiri: Det empiriska materialet utgörs av semistrukturerade intervjuer med fyra personer verksamma inom fyra olika branscher för att skapa en bredd av det empiriska underlaget och för att belysa olika åsikter och infallsvinklar kring First Mover Advantage. Intervjuerna kompletteras även med sekundärdata där så behövs för att skapa en tydligare bild av problematiken och för att täcka in samtliga relevanta diskussionsområden.

Slutsats: Resultatet av studien visar att det inom vissa branscher kan förekomma så kallade First Mover Advantages men att dessa beror på långt fler faktorer än att bara ha varit först på marknaden. De aktörer som besitter en konkurrensfördel måste även vara anpassningsbara i utvecklingen av marknaden för att deras konkurrensfördel inte ska gå förlorad. Vi fastslår vidare att vissa branscher i högre grad är påverkade av First Mover Advantage än andra. (Less)

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to examine if and in that case how companies can create sustainable competitive advantages by being the first entrant on a market.

Methodology: The study is a qualitative study of First Mover Advantage with an abductive approach. Previous research and theoretical frameworks have been used along with semi-structured interviews to create a more complete view regarding the importance of First Mover Advantages for the players of the market.

Theoretical perspectives: The study’s theoretical frame of reference is compiled of well-known theoretical frameworks such as Five Forces, Resource Based View and Red Queen Theory. These are supplemented with theory from previously conducted research in the field and extracts from quantitative studies on the effects of First Mover Advantage within different industries.

Empirical foundation: The empirical material is based on semi-structured interviews with four persons working in four different industries to create a broad perspective of the empirical foundation and to highlight different opinions through different angles of approach with regards to First Mover Advantage. The interviews are also supplemented by secondary data where needed to create a clearer view of the issues and to cover all the relevant areas of discussion.

Conclusions: The result of the study shows that there within some industries can exist so called First Mover Advantages but that these are due to far more factors than simply being the first entrant of the market. The players who hold a competitive advantage must also be adaptable in the development of the market in order for their advantages not to be lost. We also conclude that some industries are affected by First Mover Advantages to a higher extent than others. (Less)
