- Abstract
- The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) was established in the post Second World War society in Western Europe. Its emphasis was to resolve the problems regarding the agriculture and non-existing food supplies, by offering subsidies to vulnerable farmers. This was assumed to increase the farmer’s production incentives.
Today, CAP constitutes almost half of the common EU-budget, still subsidizing farmers in order for them to maintain production efficiency and income-stability. But does CAP still has a clear reason to exist?
This thesis will present a comprehensive analysis of CAP, which questions whether or not it is a legitimate political system. This is partly investigated by addressing the opinions of Swedish farmers in the Skåne region.... By adopting legitimacy theory in relation to the opinions of the concerned farmers, this analysis has resulted in a conclusion which reads that CAP is not to be considered as a legitimate political system. In addition, if CAP is in fact not legitimate in its current form; could one question the legitimacy of the EU as a whole? This will be discussed yet remain unanswered, thus invoking further research to be executed on the matter. (Less)
