Abstract
At the NICU at Lund University Hospital a pilot study was performed, where the participants were parents of either premature babies with brain hemorrhaging or babies born with asphyxia. Both diagnoses are associated with insecurity regarding outcome in terms of future conditions such as cerebral palsy. The participants were interviewed at two occasions, with six months in between. Standardized questionnaires assessed the parents´ depression and trauma symptoms as well as their strategies for coping. These measures were compared to their reaction to their child´s diagnosis and the prevalence of secure base-scripts. The results were processed and interpreted using non-parametric statistics and cannot be used for generalizations, but some... (More)

These measures were compared to their reaction to their child´s diagnosis and the prevalence of secure base-scripts. The results were processed and interpreted using non-parametric statistics and cannot be used for generalizations, but some interesting observations were made, suggesting areas for further studies. Associations were found between functional coping and lower ratings of depression, whereas dysfunctional coping, and symptoms of trauma, were associated with difficulties accommodating the child´s diagnosis. There was a negative association between the experience of trauma and the prevalence of secure base-scripts, which according to the results of this study is a predictive variable regarding the parent´s resolution of diagnosis. A special conclusion was made about the vulnerability of fathers. (Less)
