The aim of our study was to collect material from male Swedish bloggers that themed their blog about fatherhood. We wanted to distinguish if there were any factors visible through a blog that could create, uphold or change the modern role of a father. We made a qualitative study based on text- and discourse analysis, with material from five different blogs that were followed for three weeks. We analyzed our material by using Goffmans theory on roles.
Our results were that we could see distinct indications that fathers today are uncertain or insecure about their paternal role. This does not mean that it affects their quality as a parent; it is a process that is internalized and we believe that it only affects how they see themselves in the defined role. We see, as well as the fathers themselves do, that they are quite progressive in terms of fatherhood ideals. Therefore it is interesting to see that what they think is a good father doesn’t always match their own actions. Neither does their thoughts on equal parenthood and gender issues. We can also see in our results that being able to communicate reflections in blog form offers the fathers a new arena for expression of emotion, networking with other fathers online and the feeling of being a role model and an unofficial support system for others.
