The aim was to contribute to an understanding of the students' thoughts, feelings and ideas concerning the way knowledge is transmitted to them in regards to the profession of being a social worker as well as of already active social workers, and how this forms the basis of the students´attitude toward social work today. Some specific themes were brought up and discussed in the interviews; empowerment, power, and status in social work. The results indicated that the students chose to become social sorkers in order to help people and that some felt that the picture of the profession that was transmitted during the education was of a poorly paid and low status profession. Despite this the students expressed a pride of the profession they have chosen as their vocation. Starting off from a constructivist perspectivethe study concludes with a discussion concerning how knowledge is transmitted and maintained in a specific educational setting. (Less)
