Abstract
Music distribution today and tomorrow - from the perspective of the music publisher, the music producer and the artist.
The purpose of this study was to assess how a music publisher, a music producer and an established artist experience the music distribution of today and how, in their specific perspectives, it may look like in the future. This qualitative study is based upon in depth interviews with predefined drafts of questions and subsequent transcription and systematic analysis of the outcome. All participants in the study were supposed to be established and experienced in the music business.

In both physical and digital music distribution, the product is sent to a “warehouse” that stores the product with subsequent allocation to each respective retailer. The “warehouse” has contracts with various digital retailers. The music publisher/music producer/artist thus only needs to have one contract, i.e. with the warehouse and not with each individual retailer. As a consequence of the reduction on sales that followed the establishment of illegal file sharing, legal services for online purchase of music have been created, e.g. streaming based services like Spotify or online stores like iTunes.
The study participants unanimously stated that legal services for online purchase of music, in synergy with social network sites, will constitute the main force of future music distribution. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)
(Less)
