- Student housing is an ongoing and ever debated issue. Students often have to pay for inefficient square meters which are both difficult to furnish and lack function. In Helsingborg, the supply of student housing is wide but with varying quality and efficiency. Therefore, future student accommodations in Helsingborg should be carefully planned and adapted to their purpose - with more effective square meters as a result. - Student housing is an ongoing and ever debated issue. Students often have to pay for inefficient square meters which are both difficult to furnish and lack function. In Helsingborg, the supply of student housing is wide but with varying quality and efficiency. Therefore, future student accommodations in Helsingborg should be carefully planned and adapted to their purpose - with more effective square meters as a result. This paper focus on a housing concept and a new construction plan for one room apartments with separate kitchens totaling in 18-22 square meters. The concept was conceived and created after a study made with students from Helsingborg as well as an analysis of the one room student accommodations in the city. In addition, the significant work of specialized student accommodation architects and recent publications in the field has been of great help. Based on the guidelines of the concept an effective and unique floor plan has been illustrated. And in order to put the concept in a real context a virtual one story house was created on a site in Helsingborg. The analysis of the concept and the construction plan show that today’s students have different needs than what is offered in the student housings of the 1960s and 1970s. Today, for instance, students want proper kitchens and not small cooking areas or big community kitchens. At the same time, new-built student housing bathrooms are often huge due to the requirement of accessibility for all. This is space that, according to students, rather would have been seen added to the living room. A change in construction laws are needed - exemption rules has to become more accepted in order to fulfil students wishes. Keywords: Student apartment, housing design, compact living (Less)
