Abstract
Sweden has a vision of building a sustainable society. To reach this vision a number of goals, such as transportation political goals, regional goals and environmental goals, have been set. One way to reach the aforementioned transportation political goals for a good and safe traffic environment is to increase the use of public transport and thereby reduce the need for people to use their car. Compared to travel with the car, public transport is a safer and more space efficient option, which in turn also is better for the environment.

Sweden has a vision of building a sustainable society. To reach this vision a number of goals, such as transportation political goals, regional goals and environmental goals, have been set. One way to reach the aforementioned transportation political goals for a good and safe traffic environment is to increase the use of public transport and thereby reduce the need for people to use their car. Compared to travel with the car, public transport is a safer and more space efficient option, which in turn also is better for the environment.
Trafikverket (the Swedish Transport Administration) has together with other stakeholders decided to reach the goal of doubling travel with public transport by the year 2020. To increase the competitiveness of public transport motorway bus stops are built in order to create a faster and more efficient way of transportation, but these will only be established in special cases, for e.g. rapid express buses. This thesis aims to develop a basis for recommendations regarding future construction of motorway bus stops. The recommendations are based on studies and evaluations of existing motorway stops and recommendations in the VGU. Today there are two ways to separate a motorway bus stop from the roadway: • As a stop on an entry- or exit ramp • As a separate stop with deceleration and acceleration stretches along the primary road or as a separate stop connected to a ramp system Compared to the rest of Sweden Skåne (the most southern county) has long experience of locating bus stops along motorways on entry- and exit ramps. A modern bus stop should have good access for different groups of road users and should function as a station for interchange between different modes of transport. Bus passengers should have the opportunity to safely park their vehicles in direct connection to the bus stops. When a new stop is to be built it’s important to pay specific attention to the connections to the bus stop as the motorways are characterized by large traffic volumes and high speeds. The connections to and from the stop should be grade separated from the motorway and designed to attract pedestrians to cross there instead of crossing on the motorway. The first option should be to locate the bus stop on the ramp in connection to the motorway interchange. The second option should be to consider the possibility of building a separated bus stop on the primary road. As the vehicle speeds are lower at the interchange itself or on the ramps than on the motorway it is from a safety point of view preferable to locate the bus stop there. Bus stops on ramps should be placed as close as possible to the secondary road, as the speeds are lower there. To locate a bus stop on a ramp makes it possible to construct natural and simple connections to and from the urban areas for cyclists, pedestrians and car drivers in terms of carpool-parkings and other connecting roads. A stop on a ramp is often a cheaper solution than a separated stop as the separated stop requires more space. There are currently ongoing discussions about introducing technical solutions that inform the bus driver if there are no waiting passengers at the stop i.e. there is no need to make the detour from the motorway. By introducing such a system it would be possible to save up to 42seconds per bus stop. The traffic safety on motorway bus stops is rather good and there are hardly any accidents. Bus passengers do, however, express the need of improved lighting and comfort at the bus stops. With such improvements costs increase and may jeopardize the construction of new bus stops along the motorways. The biggest challenges with motorway bus stops is to keep the costs down and to conduct proper before studies in order to minimize the risk of constructing a bus stop that is not used. (Less)
