- Abstract
- The construction sector is often criticized for its lack of efficiency and quality. When the construction industry is compared to the rest of the domestic manufacturing industry, the general conclusions of the industry’s low efficiency is confirmed. The purpose has been to clarify why there is no sustainable building, despite the well-developed technology that now is available. The purpose has been to clarify why there is no sustainable building, despite the well-developed technology that now is available. The report also examined what inspires and motivates the construction industry players to build and invest sustainably. A definition of sustainable construction were designed in this report to prevent misunderstandings, this because there still is no general requirement of what such must comply. The definition is based on four parameters: Economic, environmental, technical and social. A fully sustainable construction requires that all parameters of the definition are as developed as possible. To get a status report of the player´s thoughts and experiences of sustainable construction a survey was designed to construction clients, contractors and real estate managers. As a complement to these an interview was carried out to get an idea of how the work is going to transform the building sector's attitude and approach to the subject. In the process an extensive literature study has been conducted which covered a number of areas that have been identified as important for the success of sustainable construction. These substances are: Environment, environmental certifications, wastage, diversity, the construction client, competition, project delivery methods and procurement. It has been established that the problems in the studied areas often are caused by poor work with experience feedback and a lack of commitment. The results therefore raised awareness of the urgency to look beyond the operator groups and focus on the individual’s needs and opportunities instead. In order to reduce wastage, improve efficiency and build sustainable requires that the total knowledge of the industry is used which in turn requires dedicated employees. (Less)
