Abstract
At this point, railway switching systems exchange takes about 15 hours to perform. It means that long time is needed if performing multiple exchanges. It even means that traffic on tracks has to be disallowed for a long amount of time. It costs maintenance companies like Infranord a lot of money to keep tracks free from other vehicles during the work. The company needs to purchase special permission to be allowed to be the only company allowed on the tracks during that time. That adds up with costs of resources needed to perform the work. All put together, this demands a high budget. The shorter time workers need to be on duty – the less the company spends on human resources. All put together, this demands a high budget. The shorter time workers need to be on duty – the less the company spends on human resources. If the company manages to cut time spent on performing the exchange of railway switching systems, lower budget is needed. It even means becoming a more attractive and competitive railway maintenance entrepreneur. Until now there has not been done specific research and analyses of processes during railway switches exchange processes. This should be done to find the most critical and time demanding processes. For that reason Infranord has suggested this thesis approach. By use of time studies, interviews and literature studies it should be possible to idfentify the most time demanding processes and give solutions to improve these. Time studies have been conducted and analysed to find the methods which are most effective. The time studies which have been done were performed on simple (two-ways) switches. The objective was to make it possible for the company of performing the railway simple – switch exchange within 8 hours. Analyses of time studies and assembled facts are shown as results and recommendations for Infranord. These are grounded on comparison of different methods of changing the switch. Every method has been presented by motivations and reference to time studies which have been done. Diagrams show the processes that are the most time consuming. (Less)
