Abstract (Swedish)
The comfortable garment is about creating a comfortable experience with all that it implies, both
physiologically and psychologically. The project describes the interaction between expectations and
needs, in and across situations, in order to be and feel prepared, relaxed, and while still well dressed.
The Expectation of this project is that it should be an eye opener to take get new knowledge about
how we dress, why we wear clothes like we do and how we optimize the environment for our body.
In order to distinguish the garments in the concept from today’s apparel categories and clothing,
whose names are coloured by individual associations and prejudices, the garments have been assigned
new names “Sika” and “Kalorint”.

The name “Sika” comes from the word “sicca” which in Latin means dry. The garment should be worn directly to the skin and
the garment’s main purpose is just that; to keep the skin dry.
The name “Kalorint” comes from Latin words “Calore” which means heat and the word “inter” which means between. The garment
is the middle layer between the inner and outer layer and the garment’s main purpose is to keep the heat.
The brief was to design a garment or a collection that targets a future, conscious and semi-active
audience in 2015. The garment or garment’s function is to convey an identity, be presentable and be
comfortable. There was also a personal brief based on the curiosity to explore and develop designer
skills beyond the safe frame of a common industrial design project.
Clothes are all around us: in shops around town, on the Web, in fashion magazines, dressed on people
around us, in our closets, at night, during day, on the job, at the party - everywhere. They come in
all different price ranges and in all different styles, almost. It may seem hard to come up with something
new in the clothing industry, but if you look closely at what range the supply actually contains, it
is still limited.
Today, we see tendencies that indicate future trends that the previous conservative dress codes are
going away, a personal style at work is requested and a more active society is awaiting. The project’s
future scenario involves, among other things, that the car as transportation is replaced, even to and
from work and other more dressed-up connection. Instead people will start choosing a cleaner and
healthier alternative such as cycling, walking or similar. The target group is the conscious semi-active
enjoyer of life.
The fashion industry is working with categorizing garments into different “boxes”, which in most cases
are linked to a situation: a party, at home, exercise, work, etc.. Part of the project has been to show
that these categories often are linked and that there is a grey zone between and around these situations
where the clothing need requirement has not yet been observed.
An insight into the textile industry show a complex structure built up with different levels of innovative
systems. It begins with a textile fiber that eventually forms into a fabric and then reaches all the way
into a sewn garment with a given garment-name, a brand, an identity and an expectation. It is a
complex structure that results in a load of trademarks, brands and trade names in different levels of
the system.
Clothes are meant to be used on the body. For optimal functioning the body requires a certain physical
environment. One way to customize garments for the physical environment is the “three-layer
principle” a well established principle among sports workout clothes that came to be of great importance
to the concept.
Clothing creates expectations and affect situations. Dressing is partly about preparing for the activity
you dress up for. (Less)
