- Abstract (Swedish)
- During the past decades, there has been a struggle for land reform in Brazil among poor farmers and rural workers. The Catholic Church, along with some other churches, has been part of this, through the "Commissao Pastoral da Terra" and the base communities linked to the liberation theology movement. The political and theological context has changed in many ways since the emersion of liberation theology in the late 1960s. Over the years the churches separately have published various documents addressing the issue of land and in 2006 bishops and pastors from four churches (Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran and Methodist) signed and ecumenical document called "Os pobres possuirao a terra" (The Poor Will Own the Land).

This thesis aims to study the theology of that document, focused on how the concepts of life and death are used in its argumentation. A system-immanent analysis is used, in which some of its closest context is also taken into account.
Life and death are very central to the theology developed in "Os pobres possuirao a terra". The dualism of the God of Life, Creator and Lord of the lands, on the one hand, and the poor people suffering from problems caused by greed and the so-called idolatry of the market - that is, sin and death - on the other, serve as the main basis for the theology. The purpose of the church is to interpret the society and address the needs so that the poor and all creation may have life in abundance. There are several similarities with liberation theology, as well as with some leftish ideas, though it is not mentioned, but rather more traditional theological authorities. The bishops find new liberalism and industrial agriculture the biggest problems facing the countryside of today´s Brazil. (Less)
