Abstract (Swedish)

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to investigate how the Chinese nationalism is used as a power tool for the non-democratic regime in China to legitimize its power within the Chinese people. The study investigate Chinas involvement in the conflict of the Spratly Islands and how the Chinese rhetoric is used to create cohesion and legitimacy for the Chinese communist party (CCP), and not the global impact of the conflict on the Spratly Islands. Official statements regarding the conflict are analyzed in the way the Chinese nationalism has evolved during the last 20-30 years. The conflict concerning the Spratly Islands is therefore studied as a case study.

The study that has been made as a combination between a rhetoric analyze and a argumentative analyze, shows that the nationalistic ideal that can be found within the population of China is something that has been largely developed and created by CCP. This effort has been made in order to continue to legitimate their power, when the legitimacy of communism faded during 1980 and 1990’s within the population. The arguments CCP used to create nationalism as a working tool to legitimize their continuing power in the 1980 and 1990’s can also be found in the rhetoric used by China today regarding the conflict of the Spratly Islands.
