- Behavioral economics tries to explain phenomena that neoclassical economics fails to. One such event is charitable giving, why do people donate money to a receiver that they never expect to meet? The proposed question in this thesis is: What influences an individual’s decision due to charitable giving?
By a survey, this thesis investigates which variables impacts giving behavior. Three different approaches are created: one neutral, one with a social pressure and one with positive information about a charity. The survey and the introductions to the questionnaire are based on theories within the topic. By a survey, this thesis investigates which variables impacts giving behavior. Three different approaches are created: one neutral, one with a social pressure and one with positive information about a charity. The survey and the introductions to the questionnaire are based on theories within the topic. The hypothesis that social pressure and positive information about charity will have a significant impact on giving behavior is answered by preformed statistical tests. The results indicate that neither social pressure nor positive information has a significant impact on giving behavior. Further research within the topic is needed, if the charities can be more effective a larger part of the contributions can go to the receivers. (Less)
