Abstract
Suicidal thoughts are a serious problem that’s discussed on the internet forum Flashback. The aim with this study was to examine and analyze how thoughts of suicide between members are expressed, treated and handled on Flashback and how the interaction between these members unfolds. Therefore, the members take a risk when they chose to share a serious problem about wanting to commit suicide. By use of content analysis with focus on categorization, the purpose was to explore which types that take form in the interaction between the suicidal individuals and the other members on Flashback. Suicidal thoughts are a serious problem that’s discussed on the internet forum Flashback. The aim with this study was to examine and analyze how thoughts of suicide between members are expressed, treated and handled on Flashback and how the interaction between these members unfolds. The members that participate in the communication on the forum are usually no professionals. Therefore, the members take a risk when they chose to share a serious problem about wanting to commit suicide. By use of content analysis with focus on categorization, the purpose was to explore which types that take form in the interaction between the suicidal individuals and the other members on Flashback. The theories that were used to analyze the empirical material were symbolic interaction and the dramaturgical perspective. The result showed that the members on Flashback are acting through different types which take form through the interaction.

Different themes were created; these were suicidal presentation, the suicidal types, interaction and the respondent types. There were two different suicidal types; these were the decisive and the indecisive. The respondent types were the helper, the problem solver, the ironic, the provoked and the tipster. The result showed that it’s common that suicidal people turn to the internet for help or getting tips on how to kill themselves. From my research it also showed that it’s more common that boys with suicidal thoughts turn to the forum than girls. The members on Flashback interact with the suicidal by giving them helpful advice, but there are a lot more patronizing comments and bad advice. On the forum the anonymous identity is much valued by the members. It would be a good use to involve professionals on these types of serious subjects to offer help and advice on the forum. (Less)
