- Title: ”Let’s sing it boys!”: A study of the choir leaders’ methods in arousing and keeping boys’ interest in choir singing.
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how five different choir leaders work with boys in choirs and how they arouse the boys’ interest in choir singing. Furthermore, how they cope with the young male voice when reached adolescence and how the leaders view the future of boys singing in choirs. I also want to look at an eventual significance concerning if or if not the boys rather stay in the choirs with female or male choral leaders.
I have performed this research through qualitative structured interviews with choir leaders that have mixed experiences of boys in choirs. The results of the thesis show that the... The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how five different choir leaders work with boys in choirs and how they arouse the boys’ interest in choir singing. Furthermore, how they cope with the young male voice when reached adolescence and how the leaders view the future of boys singing in choirs. I also want to look at an eventual significance concerning if or if not the boys rather stay in the choirs with female or male choral leaders.
I have performed this research through qualitative structured interviews with choir leaders that have mixed experiences of boys in choirs. The results of the thesis show that the choir leaders think that it is in favor of the boys when they get to sing with other boys. In the interest of the choir, it is good to divide sometimes the choir in boys and girls from the ages ten to sixteen. Regardless of the gender of the choir leader, it is important that he or she takes part in the knowledge about the cambiata voice to help and inspire the boys to keep on singing. There are advantages and disadvantages for both male and female choir leaders, and in the end, it all boils down to the personality and engagement of the choir leader, which makes the boys willing to sing in choir. The most important thing is to be sensitive to the boys and be responsive to their needs. You learn the most as a choir leader just by listening to the boys themselves. Nackdelar och fördelar finns för både en kvinnlig och en manlig körledare och undersökningen visade att i slutändan är det körledarens personlighet och engagemang som spelar den största rollen för att pojkar ska vilja sjunga i kör. Det viktigaste av allt visade sig att vara lyhörd och att uppmärksamma pojkarna, som körledare lär du dig mest genom att lyssna på pojkarna själva. Glöm inte att pojkar tycker om att sjunga. (Less)
