- Abstract
- Previous research in Sociology of Law has established the importance of social norms regarding the successful enforcement and legitimacy of law. It has also been shown that social norms are important as they are capable of directing and constraining human behavior. During the last several decades, Swedish legislation has enforced a zero tolerance policy towards the consumption of narcotics and illegal substances. The ”drug problem” is said to be a threat towards the Swedish society legitimizing strict legal regulation. - Previous research in Sociology of Law has established the importance of social norms regarding the successful enforcement and legitimacy of law. It has also been shown that social norms are important as they are capable of directing and constraining human behavior. During the last several decades, Swedish legislation has enforced a zero tolerance policy towards the consumption of narcotics and illegal substances. The ”drug problem” is said to be a threat towards the Swedish society legitimizing strict legal regulation. This calls for an assessment of whether the social norms regarding illicit substance use are as problematic as the legislator implies them to be. Aims. To measuse and assess social norms among adolescents and young adults in Sweden. Method. A web-based survey was sent out to 561 recipients measuring the extent and content of social norms regarding the use of narcotics. Results. The social norms regarding the use of narcotics strongly condem the behavior whilst individuals are affected by these social norms. This is supported by the low self-reported consumption. Conclusion. Social norms are capable of inhibiting the use of narcotics and in themselves capable of exercizing social control. (Less)
