Abstract
There is a growing interest in and demand for supervision to support professional development in human service organizations. This study focused on clinical group supervision provided by social workers in health care to employees at a university hospital in southern Sweden. The aim of the study was to examine the relation between the significance of supervision to the employees, when it comes to developing professional competence and coping with emotional demands, and the variables profession, age, length of service in health care, period of time in supervision, frequency of supervision and type of supervision group. Data was collected by a cross-sectional survey with a quantitative questionnaire developed for the study. The sample... (More)

Data was collected by a cross-sectional survey with a quantitative questionnaire developed for the study. The sample consisted of 51 health care professionals (physicians not included), that were attending supervision groups during the period of March to April 2013 at a public hospital in southern Sweden (72% participation rate). The main occupational groups were registered nurses and assistant nurses. Two indexes were created to measure the significance of supervision to the employees: one index for developing professional competence and one index for coping with emotional demands. The mean score of the indexes ranged from 1 to 5, 1 being the lowest and 5 the highest, suggesting high satisfaction with the supervision. The main findings were that clinical group supervision helped the employees to develop professional competence and to cope with emotional demands. The mean scores of the two indexes among the employees were above 4. Statistically significant differences were found only in the variables frequency of supervision and type of supervision group. Employees attending supervision every third or fourth week had a statistically significant higher score on the index for developing competence compared to employees attending supervision every second week. Employees in closed supervision groups had statistically significant higher scores on both indexes than participants attending open supervisions groups. (Less)
