Abstract
Bicycle traffic has a significant function for a sustainable society with good public health and environment. In order to increase the number of cyclists there is a need for a high overall standard in level of service as well as a keen attention to detail. For citizens to view the bicycle as an attractive means of transportation, cycle lanes must satisfy the cyclist’s desire for shorter travel time and direct routing. The purpose of this thesis is to identify the factors that affect the cyclist’s route in urban areas. We have based this on studies and the data we collected of traffic flows at two cycle paths, one in Malmö and one in Copenhagen. This thesis also aims to highlight level of service problems and the current differences between the cities. Malmö and Copenhagen are both recognized bicycle cities and have a long history of bicycling. The municipal work is based on the strategic plans developed regarding bicycling. In order to make an assessment of the level of service along the selected routes we have used three types of measurements: measurements at a detailed level, measurements at the overall level and observations to identify interesting trends and recurring patterns. The results of our measurements show how difficult it is to build for cyclists when they interact with other modes of transport. The optimal way to reduce the delay in the signal-controlled intersections is to avoid these altogether. Malmö's history of placing the bicycle traffic in-between the main road network is an example of how such points are avoided. The problem with this is that the cyclists are forced to take major detours. In Copenhagen the cyclists follow the main street network and can maintain a higher speed without any further detours. A combination of Malmö and Copenhagen’s urban planning for bicycling is preferable and this is something that cities also strive for today.
