The teenage years is a time when the child starts to become independent and the path to becoming an adult can be a confusing one. The sexual identity is playing an important role in the process. Attitudes and values are transferred from society into the young women and men. The aim of this study was to examine how the counselor at different youth centres work, in the individual conversation, with young people that has been victims of sexual assault. What we wanted to answer with this study was how the counselors work with and support young people that has been a victim of sexual assault. What we also wanted to examine was if expectations on sexuality and gender have an influence on how the young person understands sexual assault and if the counselors perceive any difference between young women and young men when it comes to dealing with the consequences of the assault.
The study was conducted by interviewing seven counselors at different youth centers around Skåne by using a semi structured interviewing method. One of the main results of this study was that the counselors’ perception of how they talk to the victims isn’t any different from how they talked to young people with other issues, except from the way they work with shame and guilt. Another result was that there is a difference in how expectations and norms influence the understanding of sexual assault for the young woman and young man and the consequences therefore becomes different for the victims.
