(2013) FEKN90 20131Department of Business Administration
- Abstract (Swedish)

(Less) - Abstract
- The first purpose of this study intended to examine how contextual factors influence the company's usage of reactive and proactive environmental strategy. The study's second purpose aimed to examine the relationship between company use of environmental strategy and financial outcomes.
The essay is a contingency-based study of how and why large manufacturing companies are working with environmental strategy, and what impact this has on financial performance. The study consisted of a quantitative survey study and the results where statistically tested to find general relationships. The thesis framework was based on previous research findings, our hypothesis formulation and operationalization of theory and concepts.

The empirical data consisted of survey responses from 128 companies. Furthermore, the reported financial data for the responding companies was retrieved from the database Retriever Business.
We found that the positive financial impacts of an environmental strategy depend on the contextual factors that companies primarily consider themselves to be influenced by. Companies primarily influenced by strategic factors benefit financially from a proactive environmental strategy. Other companies benefit financially from a reactive strategy. However, no environmental strategy could be demonstrated to have a negative effect on financial performance. (Less)
