Abstract
An increasingly amount of parents choose to drive their children to the school. The tendency has increased to a point when schools parking areas is too congested which impairs road safety. When motorists no longer have any space to legally unload their kids, they park in unsuitable locations that significantly increase the risk of an accident. An increasingly amount of parents choose to drive their children to the school. The tendency has increased to a point when schools parking areas is too congested which impairs road safety. When motorists no longer have any space to legally unload their kids, they park in unsuitable locations that significantly increase the risk of an accident. The increasing amount of car driving is not only creating a dangerous traffic environment, but also contributes to worsening health and daily exercise. Today, many motorists are driving their children even if the distance to school usually is less than two kilometers. The reasons for the increase in behavior are many and vary from person to person. Some of the common reasons driving children to school are; it feels unsafe to let our kids to go themselves, it’s far to school, we already have younger kids needing lift, and that the school is towards work. If every driving parents living less than two miles from the target destination would stop driving, the problem would be solved. The potential for a change is good because of the problem lies in driver’s habits and behavior. A good argument against driving is known as "vandrandeskolbussar". It’s a winning concept to increase the attractiveness of other modes of transportation than the car. Some of the benefits “vandrandeskolbussar” provides with are: speed, security, fellowship and exercise. The project has several behavior influencing strategies tested in “Seminarieskolan” in Landskrona, with a purpose to reducing motorists around the school. Observations were made before and after the various tests to see if there were any changes. A percentage increase of the group of walking was observed after the project's operations, but that the reasons for the change could be due to several factors. The biggest challenge was to create the conditions that make an impact. The problem was to reach out to parents with the information needed to increase understanding of, and interest in, the need for change. To obtain a behavior change may require much time and effort as a reconstruction otherwise would force. Therefor best results would probably succeed when the problem simultaneously solves with reconstruction and behavior impact. (Less)
