Abstract
The purpose of the study was to use an explorative approach to examine and describe Swedish Afghanistan veterans’ experiences and emotions in connection with their service abroad, and to create a broader picture with different aspects of how this is experienced by the veterans themselves. The purpose was also to let the veterans share their view of the Swedish Department of Defense’s routines including the preparations, the support given when abroad and the follow-up. The purpose was also to examine whether there could be a gender difference worth acknowledging by studying the female veterans experiences, challenges and needs. A questionnaire was sent out and answered by 14 participants: six male veterans who served in Afghanistan... (More)

The purpose was also to examine whether there could be a gender difference worth acknowledging by studying the female veterans experiences, challenges and needs. A questionnaire was sent out and answered by 14 participants: six male veterans who served in Afghanistan 2011/2012 and eight female veterans who served in Afghanistan 2009/2010. The material was analyzed with interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) and nine themes were identified. The themes were: Comradeship and support, Others can never understand, Worrying my family, The fatal shooting, Bad leadership and powerlessness, helplessness and frustration, Discontentment with different aspects of the Swedish Department of Defense’s support program with the two subthemes Inexperienced and ignorant psychologists and Strained and short debriefings and finally Gender differences in physical prerequisites. The results and the themes are discussed in relation to previous research and weaknesses and strengths with the study. Proposals for improvements in the Swedish Department of Defense’s support routines are also discussed as well as proposals for future research. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
