Abstract (Swedish)

(More)

(Less)
Abstract
Problem: This study examines problems in the Construction supply chain. Most industries have already included use of assistive technology in their daily work and I will research if it is possible to implement a system for delivery planning in the construction industry to reduce non-value adding activities. A system designed for construction delivery planning has been developed. In order to grow an understanding of the system two pilot projects were examined and evaluated.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to describe existing delivery methods and to answer if a delivery system can be implemented to improve the delivery process.

Method: Primary data was collected through interviews to establish a broad perception of the current situation on a construction site. In order to get a deeper understanding of the situation quantitative interviews were held with suppliers, site managers and logistics managers. Two case studies of projects currently using the system was investigated by interviews and action research.

Target Group: The target groups for this study are the companies that are involved in the construction supply chain. For the scope of the thesis NCC has been the main target group. Suppliers and carriers can improve their value chains in order to know the strength and weaknesses of the system. The supplier of the software, Olivetree will also get feedback on their system and how it is currently working in practice. Competitors to NCC can also be seen as a target group as well as everyone with a passion for logistics in the construction industry.

Conclusion: There is a need to change the delivery process for both assortment purchases and project purchases. There is currently no structured way to work with delivery planning. Assortment purchases are delivered according to predetermined agreements and project purchases through excel documents, mailed between Contractor and suppliers. This results in an ineffective delivery planning. The developed system contains a feature where delivery schedules are created. Delivery packages with determined content and delivery dates can be created and scheduled in an easy way reducing the possibility of delivery plans getting mixed up. This problem will be excluded since there is only one delivery plan, which is being updated immediately if a change is made. Each delivery package has a definite final destination, and has a unique label that makes it possible to locate the correct position upon arrival. As a result of accurate placement on the construction site, cost related to reduce non-value adding activities and material waste are minimized. Delivery plans are not currently paired with the purchasing system and supplier systems. This is desired in the future to further develop the process. There are many deliveries to a construction site during a project and there is often no drawn strategy how to place the material when arriving. A crowded workplace creates difficulties in the delivery planning process. Without a delivering system double bookings are common. The system includes a delivery calendar that supervisors and subcontractor can use to make an unloading reservation. To make reservation in the calendar every reservation is connected to an unloading zone and a resource. The calendar avoids delivery collisions and supplies a good view of when materials will arrive.
