Abstract
Apartheid is the Afrikaans word for apart-hood, meaning that the country is in a state of being apart. First used to describe the South African regime during the South African National Party’s rule between the years 1948 to 1994, which was based on a system of racial segregation. The term would during the 20th century get another legal meaning which meant that the apartheid system was not only applicable to the South African regime, even though the meaning of the term has similar regulations to South Africa during the rule of the National Party. However, the term has evolved into a crime against humanity and may be applicable to any state that uses similar practices as the ones used in South Africa. One of those states that could be labeled as an apartheid state is Israel because of their actions and practices within the state itself and in the occupied Palestinian territories. (Less)
