- Abstract
- Women are a relatively new component in the UN peacekeeping operations and are steadily increasing in number. Hence it is essential to evaluate how women are being portrayed in media discourse, since media has a vital role in the reproduction of gender stereotypes, or has the possibility to strive towards social change. The purpose of this paper is to examine how women, serving in UN peacekeeping operations, are being portrayed by the UN news center. This is done through critical discourse analysis with an intersectional feminist perspective. The material examined consists of 36 articles from the UN news center, published between January 2006 and November 2013. This study concludes that there is a strong link between women’s tasks and the... (More)

This is done through critical discourse analysis with an intersectional feminist perspective. The material examined consists of 36 articles from the UN news center, published between January 2006 and November 2013. This study concludes that there is a strong link between women’s tasks and the tackling of sexual and gender based violence. Women are also portrayed as role models for the communities in which they serve, and for the women of those particular populations. There is also a notion that women automatically strengthen other women’s rights, and that they have an interest in helping other women. Certain unique, or special, skills and qualities are expressed to be possessed by women, because of the fact that they are women, without consideration of previous experiences or training. An all-female police unit from India is however depicted in a way that is not consistent with the overall findings of this study. In sum, women are foremost depicted as a vital tool for the UN efforts to make peacekeeping more effective and to increase general and local acceptance. (Less)
- Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
