The method used was discourse analysis, and the selection of material was all the articles about sex and relationships in ten numbers of FRIDA from the year 2012. The theoretical base of the analysis was Wendy Holloway’s three discourses about heterosexual relationships and objectification theory. The analysis showed that FRIDA maintains and reproduces the social constructions entailed by the unequal discourses about the feminine and masculine gender positions. Adolescent girls’ approach towards sex and relationships is constructed in accordance with Holloway’s three discourses and objectification theory where girls’ sexuality subordinates both boys’ sexuality, as well as the importance of being an attractive sexual object. The meaning of life for girls is constructed as attracting and keeping a man. Girls are categorized as insecure, anxious, jealous and ashamed of their bodies. To portray girls as defected and flawed, and in need of the advice offered in the magazine, is a way for FRIDA to achieve its commercial purpose. (Less)
