Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

Abstract
The aim of this study was to widen the understanding of how young refugees experience forced migration and exile. Furthermore, the ambition was to explore how the individual experience interacts with wider social-political processes. Seven semi-structured interviews were conducted and analyzed with narrative method. Psychoanalytical, postcolonial- and sociological theories were used as a tool for understanding the interviewees’ life stories. Theoretical concepts of subjectivity, identity, racialization, crisis and trauma were used in examination of the data. Two main themes emerged in the analysis: Narratives of suffering and Narratives of belonging, with three respectively four subthemes. The first main theme concerned denial of... (More)

The first main theme concerned denial of recognition as a human being, a psychosomatic symptomatology and resistance and agency. The other main theme addressed relatedness to the native- and host country, meeting with institutions, the process of constructing a new identity and attitudes toward other refugees. The results showed that for several interviewees’ the migration experience was in many ways dehumanizing. Unbearable living conditions and painful feelings in the escape, the waiting for asylum and/or living without papers were described. The long asylum process and the refusal of asylum are discussed as a trauma in itself. The result also pointed to the need for a “transitional person” in the new country who could offer emotional and material support as well as help integrate the old and the new identity. One conclusion is the importance of addressing post-migration conditions. The discussion focuses the interaction between social policies and the refugee subject, the role of language and views on deserving “the good life”. (Less)
