- Unemployment is one of the most debated political issues. Most politicians and scolars agree that it is at serious problem, but the theories of its causes and its remedies vary. Neoclassical theory blames among other things employment protection legislation and unemployment benefits and calls for less of both. In 1974 Swedens employment protection legislation LAS was implemented, and in 1993 the employment benefits was lowered from 90 per cent of previous income to 80 per cent. This thesis tries to enquire whether those political changes had the effects on unemployment that could be predicted from theory.
